Black/Purple Varieties for 2011

Amazon Chocolate  (80 days) These potato leaf plants produce lots of gorgeous 3-4″ oval brownish garnet fruits with dusty purple tops. Flavour is outstanding; very intense and earthy with the perfect amount of sugars. Our friend Sylvia recommended this variety as it was an outstanding black tomato in her 2009 garden.

Aunt Ginny’s Purple New for 2011 ( 75-85 days) Some say the taste of this tomato rivals the great Pink Brandywine. Potato-leafed plants produce 12-16 oz reddish pink, sweet and juicy fruit. One of the most beautiful and interesting varieties with a great taste. Indeterminate.

Black Giant ( 80 days) Also known as Chernyi and Tchyorni Gigant. Seed savers have been raving about the flavour of this black beauty. The deep purple black fruit ranges from 4-14 oz with olive shoulders. This may be one of the darkest blacks. Hot summers intensify the interior colours of pink, rose, russet, gray and violet. Very good yield all summer.

Black Krim (80 days) Russian tomato named for the isle of Krim in the Black Sea. Slightly flattened 4-5″ globes up to 1.5 lb with dark greenish black shoulders. Excellent slightly smoky, salty flavour. Indeterminate

Black Plum  80 days. Another Russian rich-tasting paste tomato. Fruits are 2″ and ripen from deep mahogany to black-brown. Indeterminate.

 

Black Pineapple (aka Ananas Noire) (70 days) A very unique tomato developed by Pascal Moreau – a Belgian horticulturist. Heavy yielding plants bear large (1-1/2 lb) multi coloured  fruit with an interior flesh of yellow, green and purple – all in one tomato. Sweet and smoky flavour- with a hint of citrus. Indeterminate

Brown Cherry (75 days) A Russian heirloom. Rich bronze coloured golf-ball sized fruit. Great taste and a heavy producer. Indeterminate

Cherokee Chocolate  (70 days) Similar to Cherokee Purple, this tomato is a 12 oz fruit  with the characteristic dusky purple colouring with less green shouldering. This is probably our favourite purple tomato and  also with our market stand customers. Has a wonderful juicy sweet but tangy flavour.  Indeterminate

Cherokee Purple (75 days) Pre 1890s heirloom producing large (12 oz) dusky purple fruit with a rich sweet taste. Ripens to its purple colouring with green shoulders. Indeterminate

Debarraro Black (70 days)This tomato is a plum shaped variety with the characteristic  dusky purple colouring with less green shouldering. Has a wonderful  juicy sweet but  tangy flavour.  Indeterminate.

Eva’s Purple Ball (80 days) Outstanding heirloom that comes from the German Black Forest. Vigorous vines produce uniform tennis ball size fruits that are a pretty pink with pale purple blushing. Taste is wonderful; full and rich. Fruit likes to drop when ripe, so keep an eye on the. Indeterminate.

Japanese Black Trifele (80 days) A Russian potato-leafed heirloom. One of the best tasting blacks with high yielding plants producing red-brown 6 oz fruit. This meaty pear-shaped fruit should be harvested while the shoulders are still green. Indeterminate.

Nyagous (75 days) Another Russian tomato variety which grows in clusters and resists cracking. Beautiful smooth, round, tomatoes that are dark mahogany with dark grey-green shoulders. Nyagous is a firm and blemish-free 6 oz tomato with lots of sweet, complex fruit flavous and a good acid balance. Indeterminate.

Paul Robeson (75 days) A Russian heirloom, named after the opera singer who was an advocate of equal rights for African Americans. Very dark 8 oz tomato with green shoulders. Complex with a sweet yet tangy, rich flavour. Indeterminate

Purple Calabash (90 days) This tomato is ancient, probably dating from the 16th century. Though quite ugly it is tasty with deeply fluted fruit that is a light pinkish-brown when ripe. Indeterminate.

Purple Dog Creek New for 2011 (80 days) Production is so high it is hard to keep them all picked. These 16-20 oz dusty purple tinged fruits are juicy and very flavoutful. The seed for this heirloom came from the Dog Creek area in Munfordville, Kentucky and was given to  James “Spud” Rainey at a local picnic by the town’s people to honor him for his missionary work. Purple Prince (75 days) Another Russian heirloom that produces large (10 oz) fruit. Deep red brown colour with sweet , rich taste. This tomato is the most requested purple we have. Indeterminate

Purple Russian  (85 days) A Ukrainian heirloom. A beautiful purple paste tomato. Plum shaped fruit 3-4″ long. Great taste, sweet and meaty. Very productive. Indeterminate
